If a standard AI has ever refused a legitimate research question, you have three ways forward: a hosted service in your browser, a local LLM on your own machine, or an API.
They differ in effort, how your input is handled, cost, and flexibility, so the right choice depends on your goal.
This page compares them, lists three things to check before choosing a service, and states plainly who Deepent Research is — and is not — for.

AI-generated. For education & research.
Hosted services win on convenience, a local LLM wins on privacy and control, and an API fits when you are building your own system.
| Option | Effort | Your input | Cost | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted service | Start now | Depends on the operator's design | Monthly or free tier | A browser |
| Local LLM | Setup required | Never leaves your PC | Electricity only | GPU, memory, some tinkering |
| API | Implementation required | You design it | Usage-based | Development skills |
First, whether the refusal behaviour is baked into the model itself or kept as a separate component.
If it is baked in heavily, changing that policy requires retraining.
Second, who moderates and at which layer — is input filtered only, or output as well, and can users adjust how strict it is?
Third, whether the model weights are published and verifiable.
If they are, you or a third party can test the behaviour directly.
These three checks are covered in detail in this note: Low Guardrail Models: Why Makers Ship Safety Separately
Good fit
Not a fit
An AI built on a model whose refusal behaviour has been reduced as far as practical. Generative models normally include restrictions to avoid dangerous output; an uncensored AI uses weights with those restrictions lightened, so research and educational questions are not cut off.
Yes. The Free plan allows up to 3 messages per day. No GPU or installation is needed — just open your browser. For heavier use, see Lite, Pro, or Business.
No. Your input is used only to provide the service and is never used for training or other purposes. Our privacy policy is public.
No. The service is intended for research and educational use, and our terms prohibit using it to obtain or create dangerous materials or to carry out illegal acts.
If keeping your input entirely off the network is the priority, go local; if you want to start without setup, choose a service. When in doubt, starting with a service is the pragmatic path.
